I wish I'd spent more time on the inking, I was trying something, and it just didn't really work. But I do like the color palette, it's much more muted than what I usually do, but I think the colors work nicely together. Assignment for a class, charity piece. I chose The Elephant Sanctuary, which takes in old and sick elephants that have been retired from zoos and circuses and gives them a chance to live as natural elephants, with no pressure to perform, plenty of space to roam, and special care as needed. So I was thinking along the lines of 'what do old ladies do when they get together?' Quilts are traditionally made to tell a story, to pass along down generations, like a memory. And if elephants have anything, it is a memory. I actually had a lot of fun with this piece, especially once I figured out how to draw the perspective on the faces of the two hippos in the front, since they're at an odd angle. We were asked to do a halloween image with the theme, "creepy." Awesome assignment, right? The catch? We had a week to do it. I had to abandon my initial idea as 'way too complicated to do in such a short time,' but luckily, he did end up giving us a slight extension to finish up. This is marker, colored pencil, and a lot of digital tweaking, including adding an earlier scan of the piece at about 40% opacity to fix some issues that had cropped up when I went a little overboard with the marker and colored pencil.
